We always recommend undertaking a training needs analysis to help you identify the gaps between what people can actually do and what they are required to do. This process does not have to be complicated.
Carrying out a training needs analysis is largely a matter of getting information from people.
The steps you need to take to conduct a training needs analysis are:
- Identify competencies that relate to specific jobs/roles
- Identify competencies held by individuals for specific jobs/roles
- Compare competencies currently held by an individual with those competencies required for the job/role
- Outline the training requirements in sufficient detail and in an appropriate format so that a training program can be prepared
